About the Item
This 30 color screen print was created at Brand X Editions to commemorate the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York City. This print comes directly from the publisher, Lincoln Center Editions for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Jules Olitski was a renowned American painter and printmaker. He was born in 1922 in Snovsk, in Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (now Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine). A few months after his father, a commissar, was executed by the Soviet government. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 with his mother and grandmother and settled in Brooklyn. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in 1952, and a Master of Arts in 1954.
In the late 1950s, he became friends with the art critic Clement Greenberg. He began to show his works with Morris Louis, Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland and David Smith. In 1960 Olitski began to pour and stain dye onto large canvases. He experimented by applying paint with brushes, sponges, mops and rollers. From 1965, he began to spray paint onto his canvases in order to create dematerialised fields of colour. Later, he applied a heavier texture of paint to his surfaces. This image was created in response to 9/11 and was published by Lincoln Center in a hand signed and numbered edition of 108.

Jules Olitski
Jules Olitski was an abstract Color Field painting in the mid-1960s, Olitski focused on the material qualities of surface and color in painting, rather than the personal expression of the artist. He pioneered a technique using an industrial spray gun to lightly apply paint on unprimed canvas, creating an effect of hazy color suspended midair. Even after returning to the brush, Olitski maintained this airy interaction of color and light. Olitski represented the United States in the 1966 Venice Biennale, and was given the first solo exhibition for a living American artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969.

- Untitled (SK-PH) by Angel Otero (textured red, yellow, blue and white abstract)By Angel OteroLocated in New York, NYAngel Otero is known for oil paintings of bleeding color fields that bunch and crease to create topographic textures. In this visually compelling edition, Untitled (SK-PH), the artist flattened one of his compositions into a digital print, turning his signature folds into trompe l’oeil. Here, they read as intricate line work atop a tumultuous sea of brushed pastels. Inspired by a visit to the Lincoln Center archives, Otero drew a connection between the dramatic flair captured in photographs of operas presented during the 1970s and works from his “Poussin” series. Discussing the characters depicted in Poussin’s paintings, Otero remarked, “they were painted with poses that seemed staged, like a play set...Category
