Rose Gown is an expertly crafted, embossed serigraph on paper with foil stamping and an image size of 30 x 23 inches. From the edition of 690, the art is numbered 294/300 and signed 'Erté' lower right (there were also 300 Roman, 60 AP, 5 PP, and 25 HC). Framed in an elegant gold-tone moulding.
Two years after arriving in Paris, in a bold stroke of independence, Erté left the employ of Paul Poiret to set out on his own. In keeping with the fortune that followed him throughout his life, he met and began a brief association with Henri Bendel, owner of the famous New York department store. In his very first attempt to design for an American audience, Erté created over thirty original designs for Bendel’s review, all of which were immediately accepted. It was 1915 - the young artist/designer was just 23 years old, and his reputation was growing rapidly.
Rose Gown was inspired by one of those original thirty designs. The embodiment of elegance and glamour, Rose Gown is a design that captures the drama of haute couture at the turn of the century. This captivating dress, through Bendel’s exposure, resulted in an expanded American market for Erté and increased interest in his sophisticated, distinctive designs leading, just one year later, to his infamous association with Harper’s Bazaar.
Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Erté's publisher Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts. This print is therefore as new, with no prior ownership, coming straight from the publisher.

Erte - Romain de Tirtoff
Erté, Romain de Tirtoff, (1892–1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer who is equally famous for his elegant fashion designs and his artwork, both of which capture the art deco period in which he worked. Diversely talented, Erté was born in Saint Petersburg to a distinguished family with roots tracing back to 1548. After moving to Paris, he secured his first substantial contract with Harper's Bazaar magazine, and thus launched an illustrious career that included designing costumes and stage sets. Between 1915–1937, Erte designed over 200 covers for Harper's Bazaar, and his illustrations would also appear in such publications as Illustrated London News, Cosmopolitan, Ladies' Home Journal, and Vogue. Erté flourished and was renowned in an array of fields, including fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theater, and opera, and interior decor.
After designing apparel for the French dancer Gaby Deslys, Erté went on to design costumes, program designs, and sets which were featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923, many productions of the Folies Bergère, and George White's Scandals. On Broadway, the celebrated French chanteuse Irène Bordoni wore Erté's designs. His delicate figures and sophisticated, glamorous designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas and art still influence fashion into the 21st century.
