WAITING IN THE WINGS is a photorealist dance portrait depicting a sunlit stairwell with light yellow gloss painted walls and finely detailed drawings of five ballet dancers at their leisure, fully costumed in their pastel pink, blue, and white ballerina tutus, wearing satin toe shoes, tiara crowns, tulle skirts. Print size - 36 x 24 in. unframed, excellent condition, pencil signed by Doug Hofmann Image size - 34 x 20 in. Edition size 100, plus proofs Year published - 1995 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co. NJ Artist statement - “You can see the manipulation of the paint and the brush strokes. I don't want to paint everyday scenes. I'm a dreamer. I want to express a romantic feeling in my work. This appeals to me as a form of self-expression in today's world of structured reality”. About the artist - Douglas Hofmann was born in Baltimore, MD in 1945. After Grade and High School, he worked at a local department store as a window dresser and gained much information on color design. His appreciation for art, and encouragement by his co-workers led him to attempt making a career for himself in the art world. Upon enrolling at the Maryland Institute College of Art, he was inspired by his tutors, learning about anatomy, paint layering and techniques used by the Old Masters. Douglas Hofmann graduated and found representation for his work in Washington D.C. where he sold everything he could complete. Later one of his tutors introduced him to the New York art scene, which allowed him to expand his subject matter. Successful one man shows followed with a sell-out on his first show. Hofmann went on to learn and master the art of lithography, a technique that is quite challenging. The work of Douglas Hofmann continues to evolve – the female form being a favorite. He has received many awards and prizes for his work, and is in numerous private and public collections.
