About the Item
French artist Gaston Hoffman. Hoffman ( 1883 – 1960 ) was a painter, decorator, cartoonist and illustrator well known for his satirical French courtroom scenes. There are three related scenes here. The first one is titled "and after my little girl " In this image we see a young woman pleading before the court much to the horror (and delight ) of the judges. What could she be confessing to get such a reaction? The next in the sequence is titled " Dernier Argument " A most outrageous scene in the French Court ( ou la la the French ) . The third in the sequence is " Evacuez la Salle " everybody out of the courtroom " All in good condition coming to you straight from the publisher Sidney Z. Lucas and hand signed by the artist. paper size is 19.75 x 25.75 image size 14.75 x 18

Gaston Hoffmann
Gaston Hoffmann (French, 1883-1960) worked as a painter, decorator, cartoonist, and illustrator in France and Quebec throughout the first half of the 20th century. He examined contemporary events and subjects in his work as well as explored the limits of his imagination. Hoffmann is known for his theatrical paintings as well as his satirical prints. Hoffmann was born in Paris and was educated there at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. After the war he worked between 1918 and 1921 together with his friend Charles Schneider, for whose glass factory he decorated vases with delicate plant, flower and animal motifs inspired by the Art Nouveau style. At the time, he also worked for the Sèvres porcelain factory, designed posters and painted two large murals in Quebec, teaching at the academy there between 1924 and 1926. He painted narrative genre scenes, often with a humorous undertone, but also representations of wonderful underwater worlds populated by nereids and strange creatures. He translated themes from literature, poetry and the Bible into performances full of emotion and deals with themes that, surprisingly, are still topical. He wrote educational books for elementary school art, created cartoons, murals, painted altarpieces, illustrated books, and caricatures, for example, of the pompous French judiciary. Hoffmann died in Metz in 1977, aged 95.

This is a signed limited edition etching numbering 68 out of 100. There is also a signature by the artist embossed in the paper just below the pencil signature. The paper is very fibrous and is deckle -edged. The paper size is 26 x 20.25 Image size 15.50 x 12.50. This original rare etching is in very good condition. Argentinian-born artist Leonor Fini (1907-1996) is considered one of the great female artists of the twentieth century. She moved to Paris in the early 1930’s where she spent most of her life and almost immediately formed friendships with Salvador Dali, Cartier- Bresson, Max Ernst and other intellectuals of the time. At twenty five she had her first one person show in Paris and was included in the 1936 pivotal exhibition at MOMA…Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism…..and that same year had an exhibition at a famous avant garde gallery in New York. Although Fini never considered herself a Surrealist she maintained close personal relationships with several members of the group.
