About the Item

Jeanne Bloch - From Le Café Concert is an original print, realized in 1893 by Henri-Gabriel Ibels. Black and white lithograph on paper. Good conditions except for some ripple along the margins. The artwork is attached on passepartout: 52.2 x 38.5 cm The print is from the portfolio Le Café Concert a suite of lithographs on japan paper by Lautrec and Henri-Gabriel Ibels, printed by Edward Ancourt & Cie and published in 1893 by l'Estampe Originale. In this portfolio, working with the artist Henri-Gabriel Ibels and the writer Georges Montorgueil, Lautrec created an ode to the café-concert. Montorgueil’s essay argued that café-concert are place for people from all walks of life to relax and communicate. This print represents a portrait of Jeanne Bloch, known also as Block, a French singer and actress. She is also known as Mademoiselle or Madame Block. She was called "the colossal singer" except that, of a colossus, she had, rather small, only the waist. Sign of the artist printed on lower left. Henri-Gabriel Ibels (Paris, November 1867 – February 1936) was a French illustrator, printmaker, and painter. He was a member of Les Nabis from 1889. Ibels drew his inspiration from life on the street, from cafés, etc. He collaborated with Toulouse-Lautrec and became involved in the avant-garde theater. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1891. He realized graphic design and advertising, lithographs and posters for theaters, cabarets, and book illustrations.
