About the artwork
Johannes Heisig takes on the artistic challenge of interpreting Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio in a pictorial manner. Probably Bach's most famous sacred composition, it was performed for the first time in 1734/1735 during the Christmas season at the Nikolaikirche and the Thomaskirche in Johannes Heisig's hometown of Leipzig.
Heisig chose the third line from the aria of the sixth and final part of the oratorio, intended for Epiphany: “My treasure, my sanctuary is here with me”.
Now, you arrogant enemies, you may tremble;
what kind of fear can you arouse in me?
My treasure, my sanctuary is here with me.
You may seem still so horrible,
threatening to defeat me once and for all,
yet see! My Savior lives here.
- Christmas Oratorio, 62th Verse.
A large, striding figure with an outstretched arm places his hand on the head of another figure, which can only be guessed at, who stands motionless with his legs overlapping the picture. In addition to the contrast between movement and stillness, the picture's tension is heightened by a contrast between light and dark. The dark striding figure seems to be stepping almost violently into the light figure, covering its eyes with its hand and kicking its sex with its foot, causing the light figure to open its mouth and scream. "My treasure, my treasure" is almost raped here instead of being honored as such, with which Heisig carries the Passion that Christ suffers through all of us into the Christmas Oratorio.

Nun mögt ihr stolzen Feinde schrecken;
Doch seht! mein Heiland wohnet hier.
- Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248, 62. Strophe

- Memory and Present - The flowing space of memory -Located in Berlin, DEKarl Ludwig Mordstein (1937 Füssen - 2006 Wilszhofen), Memory and Present, 1983. Color etching, copy 41/50, 22.5 x 28 cm (image), 40 x 45 cm (sheet), 43 x 48 cm (frame), titled, numbered, monogrammed and dated with pencil. Framed behind glass. - in very good condition - The flowing space of memory - About the artwork On an implied horizon line, a dog-like animal has risen on its hind legs and is about to jump over some kind of hurdle. To the left, a small flag is waving in the wind. The animal and the flag point forward, toward the reader, into the future. The flagpole, however, bends backwards in the opposite direction, corresponding to the impulse of movement of the sign-like formations in the "sky". The title of this work by Mordstein is also revealing. It reads "Memory and Presence" and thematizes the system of signs above the animal as memory. It is therefore not so much a sky as the space of remembering consciousness. Memory moves into the past, but comes from the future and begins where the animal first moves. Here, Mordstein develops a subtle pictorial philosophy about the character of time and the structure of memory, in which the system of signs representing the content of consciousness is inspired by the pictorial language of Paul Klee, whom Mordstein continues to think about in his own way. About the artist After graduating from the Werkkunstschule in Augsburg, Karl Mordstein worked as a commercial artist in Munich before becoming a freelance artist and concentrating entirely on his own creations. In 1970 Mordstein married the sculptor Sinen Thalheimer and the artist couple moved to Starnberg. In 1972, Mordstein had his first solo exhibition in Munich, which marked the beginning of an active international exhibition career that lasted for decades. From 1987 the couple lived on the Hollerberg in Wilzhofen. "It is certainly not wrong to recognize in the impression of his calmly floating color drawings the expression of a state of mind that owes itself precisely to this conscious turning away from the hectic art market: concentrated serenity. It is not a changing state of mind, but an empathy with the supra-individual rhythms of creation, the perpetual genesis in the natural cycle of becoming and passing, which is expressed in them." - Stefan Tolksdorf Selected Bibliography Karl Mordstein. Hinter Glas gerahmt.

- Rudolf v. Rittner as Florian Geyer - Last man standing -By Lovis CorinthLocated in Berlin, DELovis Corinth (1858 Tapiau - 1925 Zandvoort), Rudolf von Rittner as Florian Geyer, 1924 (Müller 854), drypoint signed in pencil. 20.4 × 14.2 (plate size), 37.7 × 30.6 cm (sheet size). Published by Karl Nierendorf, Berlin. Framed in a passepartout. - Strong, precise impression. Frame a little bit rubbed and with two small damages. About the artwork The knight is a leitmotif in Lovis Corinth's work, culminating in his Self-Portrait in Armour of 1914. Of all the paintings on this theme, Corinth most often depicted Florian Geyer. Descended from a Franconian noble family, he fought for the freedom of the peasants during the peasant wars of the Reformation, first diplomatically and then militarily, leading the legendary Schwarzen Haufen (Black Troops). The name derives from the black uniforms with which Geyer dressed the peasants willing to fight. During the Napoleonic occupation, the freedom fighter Florian Geyer was sung about by the Romantics, and the free corps Die Schwarze Schaar, founded in 1813 by Major von Lützow, succeeded the Schwarzer Haufen. It was against this historical background that Gerhard Hauptmann wrote the revolutionary drama Florian Geyer, which premiered at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1896. While the actor Rudolf Rittner, who would later appear in Fritz Lang's films, initially played the role of Schäferhans, he took over the leading role in the new production at Berlin's Lessing Theatre in 1904, again directed by Emil Lessing, which established his fame as an actor. Hauptmann himself praised the acting. He wrote to Hugo von Hofmannsthal: "It went quite well with Florian Geyer. In any case, I had the great pleasure of seeing the play again in an admirable performance". And Lovis Corinth was so taken with Rittner's performance that he painted an oil portrait of him in the role of Florian Geyer in 1906. After two further graphic versions in 1915 and 1920/21, Corinth returned to the painting a year before his death and almost twenty years after the oil painting to create this graphic version in 1924. Even the inscription in the picture was taken over. This proves all the more the importance of the knight and freedom fighter for Corinth's self-image. The oil painting, in particular, proclaims the single-minded determination to fight to the last for the values defended, manifested in the oil painting by the tattered flag held out to the enemy. There is a parallel with Rainer Maria Rilke's 1899 story The Cornet, in which the protagonist goes down with the flag that he first saved at the risk of his life. Consequently, the portrait is also a self-portrait, and the knight's armour is not an academic costume or an ironic refraction, but an expression of Corinth's self-image, which also includes his self-representation as an artist. The Secession poster...Category
