Figurative French etching from the Larousse dictionary of various gymnastic vaulting events. Each event features multiple stages of the movement, similar to the style of Eadweard Muybridge. Currently hung in a solid black from with a wide white matting.
Dimensions Without Frame: H 3.5 in. x W 4.25 in.
Artist Biography: Louis Bombled (1862-1927) is a French painter , draftsman and engraver. He was the son of the Dutch painter Karel Frederik Bombled. Living in Chantilly, he became a pupil of Évariste-Vital Luminais.
He worked for the newspapers L'Illustration, Le Monde illustré, Le Petit Journal La Caricature, Le Chat noir, le Journal des voyages, and was also the illustrator of the works of Georges Courteline, Jules Michelet, Walter Scott, Fenimore Cooper, among others.
He became particularly popular for his numerous military illustrations.

Artist Biography: Martin Lewis (1881-1962) was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia on 7 June 1881. He was the second of eight children and had a passion for drawing. At the age of 15, he left home and traveled in New South Wales, Australia, and in New Zealand, working as a pothole digger and a merchant seaman. He returned to Sydney and settled into a Bohemian community outside Sydney. Two of his drawings were published in the radical Sydney newspaper, The Bulletin. He studied with Julian Ashton at the Art Society's School in Sydney. Ashton, an English-born Australian artist and teacher, known for his support of the Heidelberg School and for his influential art school in Sydney.
