Rafael Caseres
Original Paco Reyes Presenta Su Ballet Teatro con y Gloria Libran vintage poster

c. 1940

About the Item

Original vintage poster: Musical Dance Flamenco Spanish Caseres & Arseni Theatrical/Musical Theatrical 1940s. Ballet Teatro. 1941. Artists: AMADEU ASENSI AND RAFAEL CASERES The artists who made this poster were also mid-century stage designers. Their innovative approach to space and form can be seen in this illustration for the Ballet Teatro in Spain: "... A conscious reaction against naturalist sets. In some cases, the harmonizing of color was of foremost importance... In others, a potentially realistic subject matter was made unreal through exaggerated, unusual perspectives in which geometrical shapes assumed a dominating significance" (Reception and Renewal in Modern Spanish Theatre, 1939-1963, p. 39). Indeed, the surprising combination of pink and green, the divided environment, and the perspectival shift are hallmarks of a new vision for Spanish theatre. Restored fold marks A- condition. • 'Summer', New York ASL, Art Students League, PAFA, Salon d'Automne, Paris
    By Nura Ulreich
    Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right 'Nura' for Nura Woodson Ulreich (American, 1899–1950) above copyright information 'Nura W. Ulreich' and dated 1938. The poem below the figure of Summer reads: "Shimmer of heat from the hot dust road. Cold is the mud where the fern grows deep. Flower-scented atmosphere- peaceful sleep. Humming Bird daintily poised on its way. Velvet the night- iridescent the day. Showers and thunder, soft rainbows. Beauty incarnate in delicate clothes. This is the saga of Summer. " This painter, illustrator, muralist, lithographer, author and poet first studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before attending the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Students League in New York. Nura Woodson then studied under John French Sloan and, later, with Frederic Gruger. She subsequently moved to Paris where she lived and painted for several years and where she met and married her husband, the Hungarian-American artist Buk Ulreich. While in France, she exhibited with success, including at the Salon d'Automne, and began to paint under the brush name, 'Nura'. After returning to the United States, Ulreich continued to exhibit widely, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Galleries Biennials (1928-39), the Salons of America, the Society of Independent Artists (1928, 1941) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1929-1931).
