Rome, 1843
Hand-Colored Engraving.
An ever popular tourist destination, the city of Rome has been illustrated in great detail for centuries. Perhaps the best known and most often copied work is by Giambattista Nolli. His view of Rome was called “Pianta Grande de Roma”. Published in 1748, the Eternal City was show in its entire splendor with an accurate accounting of its revered monuments. This iconic view will forever be known as the Nolli Map.
It comes as no surprise that almost one hundred year later it would form the basis of a majestic work published by Venanzio Monaldini in 1843. Pietro Ruga, an eminent engraver of architecture and views, honored Nolli’s work with very changes and merely a few flourishes of his own.
The streets, parks, buildings and bridges are illustrated in great detail. Very intriguing architectural plans are show for the Pantheon, Coliseum, Basillica of St. Pieter, Archbasillica of St. John Lateran, Basillica of Sainte Marie Majeure. In all, there are over 100 important landmarks of ancient and modern Rome listed in the margins. One can see the appeal to visitors, native and foreign alike.
