Harry Morley
The Sacristan

1930

About the Item

This image shows a cleric seated in a church sacristy surrounded by religious statues, croziers, various saints, statues and chalices. It is an original line engraving from 1930, signed in pencil, and is an outstanding proof impression with fine, clear detail. It was presented by Harry Morley to his colleague and fellow printmaker, Robert Sargent Austin and is from the personal collection of Robert Austin. Harry Morley (1881 - 1943) After winning a scholarship in architectural studies to the Royal College of Art in the year 1900, Harry Morley progressed through his training into a career in architecture. However, he determined to become an artist while on a visit to Italy in 1907 and went to Paris to study painting in 1908. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1909, Harry Morley only took up etching in the early 1920’s. "The Connoisseurs", his most famous print, was chosen for illustration in Fine Prints of the Year for 1924. In the late 1920’s, he turned to line engraving on the suggestion of Robert Sargent Austin, and he went on to become a full member of the Royal Society Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1931. There is almost always a classical element to be found somewhere in Morley’s etchings and his later printed works are specifically classical in theme.

  • Sew What (the swells and swirls of the stripes are now in the hands of others)
    By Carol Wax
    Located in New Orleans, LA
"Sew What" is a color mezzotint with burin engraving created in an edition of 35. This impression is #6. I love sumptuously designed textiles in both real life and art. Patterns metamorphosing over fabric folds appeal to my interest in modulating rhythmic forms, particularly the swells and swirls of calligraphic stripes. I’m also fascinated by articulated wooden hand models, which appear in many of my paintings. Combining these passions with sewing paraphernalia from my seamstress days provided inspiration for my color mezzotint engraving "Sew What". Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer...
