Adolphe-François Pannemaker (Brussels, 1822-Paris, 1900)
The Belgian wood engraver, who worked mainly in France, entered in 1836 at the Royal School of Engraving of Brussels. He is the student of the British wood engraving brothers Henry and William Brown. In 1839, he produced two engravings for the edition of Mes prisons de Silvio Pellico. He then engraves most of the Belgian illustrators, such as Paul Lauters, Charles Baugniet and Jean-Baptiste Madou. From 1840 to 1845, he illustrated The People's History of Belgium. In 1843 he went to Paris, where he completed his training. François Pannemaker is one of Gustave Doré's principal engravers, but also illustrations of Erckmann-Chatrian's novels, and Jules Verne's extraordinary Travels at Hetzel, in the company of other Belgian engravers like Albert Doms and Ad. Ligny.
In 1863, he engraved some French notes as the 100 francs blue, then in 1869, the note of twenty Belgian francs.
François Pannemaker becomes professor of wood engraving at the École impériale de dessin and in 1889 he was awarded a grand prize at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
