Eric Fischl
Beach scene: Dog, Eric Fischl garden landscape with nude woman and lush grass

1989

About the Item

A nude figure bends down to touch the grass, which blooms across the composition in soft clouds of green. This idyllic landscape is one of four beach scenes by Eric Fischl. Behind the figure, a dog trots, idly regarding the youth. Fischl creates sexual tension by obscuring the gender of the subject, leaving the viewer to imagine the unobscured view from behind. The impression of two etching plates evokes a pair of snapshots – incorporating the viewer into the role of voyeur. Fischl’s painterly marks display the transparency and fluidity of a watercolor painting, yet the artist’s command of light and shadow lend this dream-like scene surprising realism. Printed in dark and light green, brown, beige, yellow and black, this print is a superlative example of Eric Fischl’s sexually charged, disquieting scenes of everyday American life and leisure. Paper 35.5 x 54 in. / 90 x 137 cm Image 31 x 45.5 in. / 78.75 x 115.5 cm Aquatint etching on wove paper. Signed by the artist, dated 1989, and numbered 66/100 lower right in pencil. Edition of 100 with 15 artist's proofs. Published by Parasol Press.

  • Microwave Oven (A Couple in the Sea)
    By Colin Self
    Located in New York, NY
A contemporary of David Hockney and Peter Blake, Colin Self is an important British printmaker whose innovative etching techniques and novel use of found materials have defined his diverse oeuvre. Yet unlike most artists associated with Pop Art, Self eschewed glossy, colorful bombast for nuanced drawings in a limited palette. Self's imagery has ranged from the geopolitical -- nuclear bombers, fallout shelters; to American icons -- hot dogs, Coca Cola cans; to the everyday -- intimate scenes of animals and plants, and whimsical figure drawings as seen here. The title of this print, Microwave Oven...

  • Cartas de Japon by Ray Smith surreal Dali esque print Japanese portfolio
    By Ray Smith
    Located in New York, NY
Ray Smith's aptitude for the surreal is apparent in this portfolio of six drypoint prints, presented in a portfolio case. Each image depicts an intriguing, fantastic landscape populated with chimeric nudes. Each one is carefully printed to appear as if doodled on lined notebook paper with ballpoint pen: Japanese letter paper chine-colle on Kizuki Hosho paper. Translated as "Letters from Japan," Cartas de Japon plays on tropes of an exotic, faraway land. The series of prints perhaps pictures Japan in the imagination of westerners, who for centuries speculated that those from other continents had wildly different bodies and customs. The title may be a reference to iconic Mexican director Carlos Velo's 1973 film Letters from Japan. Cartas del Japon, 1988-89 Portfolio of 6 drypoint prints printed on Japanese letter paper mounted on Kizuki Hosho paper Plate 6 x 7.8 in. Paper 18 x 23.4 in. Ed. 30 with three artist proofs. Printed by Hideharu Mishio, Norimasa Mizutani, and Marie Okada at Woodblock Workshop. Published by AC&T CORPORATION, Tokyo, 1989. Per the Broad: "Ray Smith’s paintings incorporate surrealistic and animistic tendencies informed by his Latin heritage as well as deep study of the history of modern art. Smith was born near the Texas/Mexico border...
