About the Item

Leon's process begins with plein air watercolor sketches that capture the essence and inspiration of a scene - what grabbed his attention. The large abstract shapes, values and colors are what establish his mood and connection to an image. He sets a spotlight where he wants to focus and allows the shapes and values in the scene to compliment the focal point. Short-hand notes in the margins allow Leon to complete the sketch and finished watercolor in the studio. Leon often enlarges and combines watercolor sketches to compose designs for wood-block and serigraph prints. He uses the Reduction Process, printing and carving a single block of wood numerous times. Starting with two large cutters, Leon carves out the whites with general strokes. The block is then inked with a rice-paste ink using brushes. The paper is registered to the block, laid over the inked surface and the ink transferred by pressure, using a circular disk called a baren. The block is carved and printed multiple times, printing a progressively darker color for each color run. The image develops through numerous color runs, with most prints having between 14 and 18 colors, a process which takes about two months per print. The serigraph process, aka silkscreen, also develops a print in layers. Leon draws a film positive for each color, which can be up to 20 colors for a completed print. The film positive is exposed to a screen coated with a light-sensitive emulsion using a high-strength UV light. The drawing blocks light from the emulsion, while exposed areas of the emulsion harden in the light. During wash out, the unexposed areas, the initial drawing, washes out leaving an open or porous screen for the ink to pass through. The areas of hardened emulsion do not print. Since the matrix is physically changed from the previous layer, the prints cannot be reproduced. Framed dimensions: 26" h x 19" w x 1" d - carved frame
