"Painting came to me by way of weaving,” Wensberg says. “As a tapestry weaver from 1982-1997, I feel I learned to ‘paint with wool’ and in 1998 I switched to painting full-time. I am primarily a landscape painter, working in oils but also enjoy figurative work and still life. Living in rural New Hampshire, I’m surrounded and influenced by the rugged and ever changing landscape around me. I travel frequently to different parts of New England and enjoy hiking, biking, boating, skiing, snowshoeing and any other activities that get me outside. My love of nature and the outdoors, and the constant variety in color, texture and atmosphere that is prevalent here in New England, are a constant source of inspiration for my work. "Paintings often begin with a plein air study, which later becomes a large painting in the studio. Photographs serve to reawaken a memory of a particular moment in time and may inspire a new piece. Paintings can develop from a very small ‘moment’ taken from a larger scene or simply from the colors, atmosphere and/or a feeling evoked that just strikes a chord in my mind. "Though representational in style, my aim is to paint the emotion of a place rather than focusing on specific local information. I remind myself constantly of the expression, ‘less is more’; what is left out of the painting is as important as what is put in. It is the absence, ‘the space between the lines,’ that jogs the senses and invites emotional involvement between the viewer and the painting. "Over the years I’ve tried to push the boundaries a bit more between realism and abstraction. Most recently paintings seem to ‘come out of my head’ rather than from specific locals. I paint mostly with a pallet knife rather than brush to further promote simplification of forms, build up the surface with paint and texture, and provide interesting and unexpected edges, blurred lines and scumbling." Molly Doe Wensberg is based in New Hampshire. About Sorelle Gallery: Sorelle Gallery is a woman-owned fine art gallery and art advisory firm located in Westport, Connecticut. Artist Statement and CV: Of his work, artist Elwood Howell says, "The greater body of my work is primary landscapes and seascapes of an imaginary nature created in the studio. Most works have a generally high horizon as a focal point to lure ones eye into the simple composition. The large area below the horizon down to the base of the canvas gives the viewer's eye freedom to roam the surface. This space gives the painting life much as soil nourishes the very roots of a tree. The imagery at the horizon gives a focal point and the expanse above serves as atmosphere to set the mood. This has been a format I have used for over forty years and it still intrigues me. In the process of correlating the colors, values and markings, with the fore mentioned ink, paint, charcoal, pencil and even by sanding, a visual conversation begins between the painting and the painter. Thus, by adjusting again and again, from hints given by previously applied paint, sometimes even an abrupt and complete change over the earlier endeavors is commanded. The discourse will probably continue forward, just as communications sometimes do with people, for new thoughts can hoover about and over time a need is created for further deliberation. Thus some "completed" works have required changes years later. Sometimes discussions, of whatever nature, never seem to be finished. When painting is viewed down the road, by another person, maybe they, too, will encounter a visual voice, which probably will be of a totally different nature than has been envisioned. However, and hopefully, at that time some connection will take root and a soul will be nourished.” Awards • Honorable Mention, Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY (2003) • Best Abstract, Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY (1982) • David G. Located in Milwaukee, WI
‘Celebration’ is an artist’s proof giclée print, signed and dated by the artist in the lower right. This piece is a part of Barnett’s ‘Morph Dog Series,’ so named for his use of a “morph dog”—a dog-shaped foam sculpture that transforms into a cube when turned inside out—to paint. Against a muted horizon, multicolored rings ignite the sky like fireworks as confetti cascades to the bottom of the frame; rows of morph dogs further ornament the display in red and blue. Giclée print on watercolor paper AP I/XXV 48 x 36 in, print 57.5 x 46.75 in, frame Signed and dated in lower right "AP I/XXV" in lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and housed in a gold finish wood moulding.
