Original "What the Liberty Motor Will Do To the Hun' vintage poster WW1

c. 1918

About the Item

Original poster What the Liberty Motor Will do to the Hun. C. 1917. Original World War 1 antique military poster. Archival linen backed and ready to frame. Good condition, where the cream borders show some signs of normal wear for a poster over 100 years old. Restored tear in center top t2" Size 25" x 38" Certificate of Authenticity. A fantastic poster used to motivate the workers producing the powerful Liberty L-12 engines in Cadillac's factories, this dynamic illustration of an Airco DH.4 raining hellfire on the Hun menace still inspires the American fighting spirit a full century after its printing. Interestingly enough, the president and co-founder of General Motors, William C. Durant, was a determined pacifist that initially refused to manufacture any and all war materials for the US military. He later relented and allowed the production of the Liberty engines at GM's Cadillac and Buick plants, leading to the creation of this stunning poster. Liberty 12-A engines were used to build D.H. 4s, the only American-made airplane to get into Western front combat. Called "Flaming Coffins" because poorly constructed fuel systems made them easy targets for enemy bullets. Used for U.S. Mail after WW I. "You who build Liberty Motors - keep thinking of the man who is going to drive them…" Cadillac Motor Co. Unusual, scarce, and boldly colored lithograph designed for factory use. Jenny-like biplane, flaming motor exposed, swoops down, firing Lewis gun at running Hun at the bottom. Scarce. This is an Original Lithograph Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.
