Union Pond, Williamsburgh, L. I. [sic].

1862

About the Item

UNION POND, WILLIAMSBURGH, L. I. [sic] is a lithograph printed in color in circa 1862. It was published by Thomas & Eno, 37 Park Row, N.Y. The printed image size is 16 3/4 x 27 inches (42.5 x 68.6 cm). This rare print is in good condition with original color. A small tear in the right margin, just to the image, that was professionally repaired, and mild toning on verso. Overall, a bright and beautiful impression. Framed in an antique 2 3/8 inch molding finished in lacquered sterling silver, a 10 ply rag stock mat with rag stock back. The outside frame size is 27 ¾ x 36 ½ inches. Winslow Homer was apprenticed to lithographer J. H. Bufford of Boston at age 19. He began working as a freelance illustrator for Harper's Weekly and Ballou's Pictorial in 1857. Homer moved to New York City in 1859 and immediately enrolled in the Life Classes at the National Academy of Design. This image was likely created soon after his move to New York City and was done as a job for Thomas & Eno. The location depicted in this lithograph was referred to in two ways, depending on the season: Union Pond in the winter months and Union Grounds during non-winter months. The Pond/Grounds was located in Williamsburg Brooklyn between Harrison and Marcy Avenues and Lynch and Rutledge Streets. It opened on May 15, 1862, as the Union Grounds, the first fenced-in baseball park, thereby allowing the owner William Cammeyer to charge admission to the baseball games. Three baseball clubs called the Union Grounds home including the Eckford Club and the Mutual Club of New York. The National Association of Base Ball Players was the first organization governing American baseball by 1865. To keep his investment profitable during the winter months Cammeyer had the ballpark flooded and Union Grounds became Union Pond. The first skating season was the winter of 1862-1863. The elegant three-story pavilion, seen here just left of center, was used to illuminate the ice during the winter and stood in deep center field during the baseball season. The Union Pond/Grounds was demolished in 1883. Today Heyward Street runs through the original grounds.

  • Hidden Cities I / second state
    By Peter Milton
    Located in New York, NY
“Hidden Cities I : The Ministry. Second State.” Contemporary artist Peter Milton created this etching and engraving in 2006. The printed image size is Image size 23.50 x 36.88 inches and the paper size is 31 x 42 inches. This impression is signed, dated, and titled in pencil and inscribed “11/75” – the 11th impression from the total printing of 75. “I do love to draw. I feel that I am being granted membership in the Brotherhood of Merlin, conjuring forth some apparition. As a drawing develops, I sense a vague presence coming more and more into focus, something in a white fog emerging and becoming increasingly palpable.” – P. Milton, “The primacy of touch. The Drawings of Peter Milton” “Working in layers, Milton begins with drawings based on people and places, with nods to Western art history and culture. He is a master of the appropriated image, a term that may conjure Andy Warhol and his Pop Art comrades. But Milton steps further back in history, avoiding the Pop sense of cool advertising and popular culture references. Instead, a broader cultural past is tapped through historical photographs of key players, architecture, and locales, which he reinvents by hand. He adds content drawn from his life as an avid reader – always with multiple possible interpretations – thus incorporating deeper meaning in his cinematic worlds. Elements of Greek mythology, classical music, art history, and history coalesce in his images, which embrace the messiness, sorrow, and elation that is life. One is hard-pressed to imagine a more erudite, skilled, passionate, and cheeky soul. In addition to a storied career in printmaking, since 2007 Milton has fearlessly produced artwork digitally. He now creates images using Adobe Photoshop in files consisting of more than two thousand layers, which are printed both as digital prints on paper and, for display on Led light boxes...

    Located in Surfside, FL
Henriette Wyeth-Hurd Hand signed, Collotype, Limited Edition of 490 Image Size: 20" x 26" framed 28.5 X 34.5 Provenance: printed at Triton Press and has their certificate of authenticity verso. Henriette Wyeth Hurd (1907 – 1997) was an American artist noted for her portraits and still life paintings. The eldest daughter of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, she studied painting with her father and brother Andrew Wyeth at their home and studio in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Henrietta Wyeth was born in Wilmington, Delaware, into an artistic family. Wyeth was the eldest of the five children of noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth and his wife Carolyn Bockius. Her siblings Carolyn and Andrew also became artists, and all three studied with their father. Andrew Wyeth became the most well-known artist of this family. Henriette contracted polio at age 3, which altered her health and use of her right hand. As a result, she learned to draw with her left hand and paint with her right. She grew up on the family farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and attended local Quaker schools. She and her siblings were eventually homeschooled because their father distrusted the public school system. She began formal art lessons with her father at age 11, making charcoal studies and geometric shapes. A child prodigy, at age 13 Wyeth was enrolled in the Normal Arts School in Boston, Massachusetts. The next year, in 1921, she entered the Boston Museum of Art Academy. Two years later she moved to Philadelphia to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By age 16, she was well known as a portraitist and received commissions for paintings of Wilmington residents. Deeply influenced by her father's unique realistic style, she rejected early 20th-century painting styles such as Impressionism and Cubism. She was also socially and politically conservative. As a result, later in life she rejected the progressive movements of the 1960s and 1970s, including the women's movement. She often criticized television and modern culture. At age 21, in 1929 Wyeth married artist Peter Hurd, a fellow student at the Pennsylvania Academy and her father's apprentice. The couple had three children together: Peter Jr., Carolyn, and Michael Hurd. In the mid-1930s they moved to San Patricio, New Mexico, settling on a farm of 40 acres. By 1939, they established the Sentinel Ranch there, gradually acquiring more land until they had 2200 acres. It was in southern New Mexico near Roswell, New Mexico, her husband's birthplace. Wyeth's work spanned portraits of adults and children, still lifes, and floral landscapes. In her work, she "often included objects that related to the subject's interest or personality. She eventually stopped painting children because, as she said, “today...
