Pierre Fix Masseau
Original Golden Arrow Poster by Fix Masseau Hand Signed 1989

1989

About the Item

This Fix-Masseau illustrated poster of the Golden Arrow is a not only great reminder of the artist’s practiced Art Deco niche but as well a reminder of the luxury of the Golden Arrow train. The poster features crisp colorization, geometric shapes and the precise elegance of the once popular Golden Arrow. The poster shows the smooth black luxury train arriving on a fervently Deco stylized platform edge. The Golden Arrow (Flèche d’Or in French) was a luxury boat train of the Southern Railway and later British Railways. It linked London with Dover, where passengers took the ferry to Calais to join the Flèche d’Or of the Chemin de Fer du Nord and later SNCF which took them on to Paris. The Golden Arrow was introduced in 1926 as an exclusively first-class Pullman with service between Paris and Calais. As a result of the decline in demand for rail travel between London and Paris, the last Golden Arrow ran on 30 September 1972. In its later existence, only the first class section was advertised as a Pullman service (Wikipedia). Pierre Fix-Masseau (1905-1995) was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. This experience greatly impacted Fix-Masseau, who continued to work within the Art Deco style for the remainder of his long career. Cassandre's interest in foreshortening, heightened focal points, and flattened planes can be seen in Fix-Masseau's works. Fix-Masseau combined Cassandre's influence with his own mastery of perspective and intricate detail to create his own, distinctive style. Fix-Masseau is best remembered for his posters featuring railway and automotive themes. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster has been hand signed in pencil by Pierre Fix Masseau. It was printed by Atelier Mourlot on heavyweight paper and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

Baumberger, Otto. PKZ 1923, Color lithograph, On Linen 50 1/2 x 35 1/2” Baumberger was one of the most prolific Swiss poster artists, with well over 200 designs to his credit. Beginning in 1917, he regularly worked for PKZ. This poster is not only the best he produced for the company but is also an icon in poster history. The tweed coat is rendered in near-photographic perfection to the point where you can practically feel the fabric. Baumberger took a totally new approach to advertising by ingeniously incorporating the poster's text into the image in the form of the label in the coat. With this poster Baumberger cemented his role as master of the "Object Poster," (a title he earned four years earlier with a classic image of a top hat), and began the trend of "New Objectivity" within the Swiss school of Graphic Design. A sensation from the day it was issued, this image remains compelling and proves to be one of the finest of the PKZ posters...
