STANDING SEAMSTRESS is an original hand drawn (not digitally or photo reproduced) limited edition lithograph by the artist Raphael Soyer - Russian/American Social Realism Painter, 1899-1987. Printed in multiple colors using hand lithography techniques on archival Arches printmaking paper 100% acid-free rag. STANDING SEAMSTRESS is a sensitive, realistically drawn portrait of a standing young woman with dark hair wearing a open cardigan sweater, posed beside her dress form mannequin, a black sewing machine visible in the background. Very fine impression - has the feel of a graphite drawing.

Raphael Soyer, painter, lithographer, and teacher, was born on December 15, 1899, in Borisoglebsk, Tombov, Russia and is best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, American Academy of Arts and Letters, American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, Artists Congress, and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Soyer taught at the Art Students League in New York. Working in oil or lithography, he was an American Scene artist who championed realism and his work portrays the daily life of New Yorkers. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice.

Raphael Soyer
Raphael Soyer, a Russian-born artist, was best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. His sensitive, penetrating portrayals include a broad range of city dwellers, dancers, shoppers, office workers and fellow artists. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice. Soyer was referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. He also wrote several books on his life and art. His brothers Moses and Issac were also notable artists.
