Etching and engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on cream laid paper. 6 3/4 X 9 5/8 inches (170 x 244 mm), margins trimmed, image intact. Rubbing in the lower left image area obscuring the publishing information (which reads Published by Mm. Darchery, St. James Street March 11, 1783), scattered light foxing, corner loss, top left corner, well outside of image area. "SMP" collector's stamp in red ink on the verso (not in Lugt), and the name "Renier" and the initials "AR" in black ink on the verso. Colors are extremely fresh. Impressions of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the British Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art.
Ex-Collection of Anne & Ferdinand Gabriel (F.G.) Renier, reknowned for their inspriational collection of children's books and works on paper, now housed in the Victoria & Albert Museum.

John Hely-Hutchinson (1724-1794) was a politician, lawyer and Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. Born in Gortroe, County Cork in 1724, he graduated from Trinity College in 1744, and swiftly built up a good practice at the Bar. From 1760 until his death he represented Cork in Parliament. Promotion to the post of Prime Serjeant followed in 1761 and on most issues he supported the Government, and acquired several lucrative offices. His appointment as Provost of Trinity as a married layman who had not been a Fellow was a continued source of friction as the Fellows resented the imposition of what they perceived as a career politician with no pretensions to scholarship. This is an original 19th century hand-colored McKenney and Hall engraving of a Native American entitled "Not-Chi-Mi-Ne, An Ioway Chief, No. 91", published by Rice, Rutter & Co. in 1865.
This original McKenney and Hall engraving is presented in a cream colored mat, suitable for framing with a protective clear sleeve. The mat measures 13.88" x 11.75" and the sheet measures 10.63" x 7.38. There is a spot in the lower left margin and tiny faint spots in the periphery, but the print is otherwise in very good condition.
