ABOUT THE ARTIST
Masami Iwata was born in Niigata prefecture. He studied Japanese-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and regularly contributed to the official, state-sponsored exhibitions of Teiten, Nitten, and Inten.
Iwata, Eikyu Matsuoka, and other leading Kyoto artists established "Shinko Yamato-e Kai" in 1921 (dissolved in 1931) to revitalize traditional Japanese painting, Yamato-e. The members of "Shinko Yamato-e Kai" combined the vivid colors and refined drawing techniques of traditional Yamato-e with the modernist design elements. Their influence is recognized as an essential influence in modern Japanese art.
