Yasuo Kuniyoshi
Untitled

1927

About the Item

Yasuo Kuniyoshi was a unique and dynamically talented Japanese-American painter, photographer, and printmaker. His works ranged from bold portraits and scenes whose singular style evoked Henri Rousseau, Fernando Botero, naive art, modern art, and expressionism, to later works in sumi e ink that were more traditional. He worked only in selective ways with models, preferring to work at least to some degree from memory for most of his finished works. The artist turned to the traditional sumi e ink for the very last works of his life after being stricken with cancer in the early 1950s. This dramatic lithograph Kuniyoshi completed in 1927 was likely rendered from memory and it possesses some of the dreamlike qualities of his earlier painted portraits.
