1944 Army MacArthur name "Lily" Mitsubishi "Type 99" Kawasaki - World War II Japanese medium bomber aeroplane
Original aeroplane recognition poster (1944)
63x47cm
A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes; this series - and we have many in this series - takes a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view.
The Kawasaki Ki-48 Army Type 99 Twin-engined Bomber, was a Japanese twin-engine bomber that was used during World War II. Its Allied reporting name was "Lily". The development of the aircraft began at the end of 1937 at the request of the Japanese military high command. Kawasaki received an order to develop a "high-speed bomber" capable of 480 km/h at 3,000m, and able to reach 5,000m within 10 minutes.
The aircraft served in China from late 1940, replacing the Kawasaki Ki-32, and were widely used in the Philippines, Malaya, Burma, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Dutch East Indies. All models continued in service until the Battle of Okinawa in April 1945, when many were converted into kamikaze aircraft armed with an 800 kg bomb. The fact that all models continued in service until 1945 reflects that many Ki-48s survived more often than not. This was due to the use of small ship formations (three to ten aircraft) escorted by large numbers of fighters (25–75), typically Nakajima Ki-43s.

Here workers in aircraft factories are encouraged to work carefully in order to avoid creating products that had to be scrapped. When Lord Beaverbrook commenced his term as Minister of Aircraft Production in May 1940 it was an industry beset with problems. Aircraft parts were produced in sufficient numbers, but assembly into flyable aircraft proved more challenging – the Castle Bromwich...Category
