Original advertising poster from 1893 for Lefèvre-Utile and Néva Russian cookie

1893

About the Item

Beautiful advertising poster from 1893 for Lefèvre-Utile and Néva Russian cookies. It was in 1882, with the arrival of son Louis Lefebvre-Utile, that LU began to expand and mechanize. In 1885, he built a 2,000 m² high-tech cookie factory on Quai Baco, replacing the buildings of the former spinning mill. He installed ovens and a steam engine. One hundred and thirty workers were employed to produce three tons of cookies a day. He invented an original product inspired by cookies from England, where he had traveled extensively. The square cookie with its scalloped edges was mass-produced from the start, to great acclaim from customers and critics alike. On February 1, 1887, Louis Lefebvre-Utile and his brother-in-law, Ernest Lefièvre, joined forces to create the LU company. The family business was transformed from a craft operation into a modern enterprise. Ernest Lefièvre took charge of the company's commercial management, while Louis Lefebvre-Utile took charge of production. He created cookies for major events, such as Alexander III's visit to Paris in 1892, which gave rise to the "Neva, Biscuit Russe". Gastronomy - Advertising - Loire-Atlantique - Russia F.
