About the Item
Crafted by the famed sculptor Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof, this compelling kinetic aluminum sculpture entitled Concentric Rinds brings to life the work of the great M.C. Escher. Escher was renowned for his mathematically-inspired woodcuts, including his ingenious 1953 engraving Concentric Rinds that inspired the present sculpture. Zadora brings Escher’s 2-dimensional design in to the third dimension with his perfectly envisioned and executed creation.
During the mid-20th century, Escher created a series of etchings that explored spherical geometry in an attempt to draw attention to the negative space of 3-dimensional objects. His work Concentric Rinds developed from this exploration. Consisting of four spherical shells that each consist of nine circles, Escher's complex sphere is divided into 48 similarly shaped triangles that emphasizes the immense, mysterious dark space within which his creation exists.
Zadora brings all of the mathematical precision of Escher's genius design into his large-scale version of the work. His four aluminum spheres are nestled together from small to large, creating a rippling effect when the work is set into motion on its axis. It is powered by a motorized mechanism hidden within its base, ingeniously added by Zadora to fully exploit the incredible visual effects of Escher's original design.
The Canadian-born sculptor Baron Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof is recognized as the world's leading gemstone artist, and his international clientele includes the world’s most discerning connoisseurs. His pieces, which range from intricate sculptures such as this to innovative bespoke jewelry, are regarded as the most prized decorative artworks in modern time.
The sculpture is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

- Tête de cariatide Head of CaryatidBy Amedeo ModiglianiLocated in New Orleans, LAAmedeo Modigliani 1884-1920 Italian Tête de cariatide Head of Caryatid Signed “Modigliani” and numbered “1/8” (near base) Bronze The figural works of the iconic modernist Amedeo Modigliani are known for their instantly recognizable style, and they are among the most coveted in the world of art collecting, with Modigliani ranking among the world’s ten most valuable artists of all time. This monumental bronze, conceived by the artist in 1910, demonstrates his mastery of sculpture. Sculpting was the artist’s self-proclaimed first and true passion — a fact sometimes overlooked due to the success of his paintings and the overwhelming rarity of his sculptures. His famed Tête series from which this bronze hails stands as his most important sculptural output, with works recognized for their timeless quality and strong, stoic presence. Tête de cariatide reflects these qualities and provides a compelling glimpse into Modigliani’s greatest artistic passion. This bronze is an enlarged casting of a wooden sculpture — the only known sculpture that Modigliani carved in wood rather than stone. Commissioned posthumously by Modigliani’s daughter Jeanne alongside the Modigliani Institute, the bronze iteration here perfectly captures the rich woodgrain texture of Modigliani’s original carving and retains its careful compositional balance. Soulful and intense, it reflects the exaggerated yet elegant elongation of the artist’s figural paintings, which became his much sought-after signature style. Modigliani’s interest in African and other non-Western art is well-documented. This bronze is reminiscent of a tribal mask or ancient deity, both due to its exaggerated features and the totemic appearance achieved by the work’s texture, meditative presence and sheer size. Yet the work also alludes to the artist’s Italian heritage and training. A caryatid is a staple of classical architecture, an ornate column...Category

- La femme aux fleurs (Portrait de Mathilde See)By Paul César HelleuLocated in New Orleans, LAPaul César Helleu is regarded among the most sought-after society portraitists of his era, and his Belle Époque works rival those of his contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini. He is best remembered for capturing the era's most beautiful socialites, including Consuelo Vanderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough, the Comtesse de Loriol Chandieu and the Comtesse Mathieu de Noailles, among others. This work, however, stands out in that it captures the charming likeness of one of his art world cohorts, Mathilde See, a Parisian-born decorator and painter of floral still lifes. She is the essence of the modern woman, captured in her fashionable dress as she strolls along the flower-lined streets of Paris. Commanding in size, Portrait de Mathilde See fully displays Helleu's mastery over the medium of pastel. The muted palette of greys and blues is typical of the artist, bringing a harmony and cohesiveness to the composition. Furthermore, Helleu cleverly alludes to See's own artistic output with a backdrop of vibrant floral blooms, enlivening the canvas and complementing the greens and blues of the peacock feather adorning her hat. The portrait is all the more significant thanks to its provenance. It was previously in the collection of A. Alfred Taubman, one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and one-time owner of Sotheby's. Considering Taubman encountered some of the most noteworthy and beautiful works of art ever made through his auction house, the fact that he chose this portrait by Helleu to grace his collection is a testament to its import. Born in Brittany in 1859, Helleu moved to Paris in 1876 in order to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. Like so many other artists of his generation, he was trained there under the Academic master Jean-Léon Gérôme. That same year, he also attended the Second Impressionist Exhibition...Category

- Israeli Bronze Sculpture Lovers Embrace Abstract Modernist Ein Hod IsraelBy Gedalia Ben ZviLocated in Surfside, FLBronze sculpture signed in Hebrew and numbered from small edition of 6 BIOGRAPHY "I was born in Czechoslovakia in the year 1925, of traditional parents. I spent my youth partly in a little town on the Moravian border, and to a greater part in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Having been attracted by the arts from early childhood on, I studied functional art at a school in Bratislava, as long as this was still possible under the Nuremberg Laws which, at that time, were also in force in Slovakia. In 1942 I was taken to a concentration camp in Poland and at the beginning of 1945 I succeeded in escaping together with a friend of mine. Until our liberation by the Russians we were hiding in the forests of Northern Poland. At the end of the War I found myself wandering about Europe, together with thousands of survivors from the Holocaust, until, in 1948 I came to Israel via the Camps of Cyprus. From 1954 onwards I have been a permanent resident of the Artists Village at Ein-Hod, together with my family. In the course of that time I studied and worked in most of the creative techniques of the arts. During various periods of my life at Ein-Hod I taught painting and handicraft at different schools. In 1965 I gave up teaching and have since devoted myself exclusively to pure art." Gedalia Ben Zvi.
