About the Item

Crimson felt takes the shape of a biomorphic form in this dynamic wall sculpture by fabric artist Chung-Im Kim. The felt fabric is cut into irregular rectangles that are sewn back together with precise stitches into an organic grid. "For me, patterns are hard to ignore as I encounter everyday life. Whether the source comes from nature, historical context or plainly created by me, working with patterns always gives me the thrill of entering a new world. A pattern can grow into a complex image jungle or a well disciplined ornamental beauty. These recent works explore the chaotic order resulting from many small pieces containing broken images. I tend to see each of these parts as an independent soul containing unique power and energy that then together becomes an entity as cells to a body. I hope to evoke the birthing tension when all are gathered." Chung-Im Kim Born in Seoul, Korea Kim received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984. She was a resident in the Textile Studio at Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, and a freelance designer before becoming an associate professor in the Fibre Dept at OCAD University in Toronto. Kim has maintained an active studio practice with exhibitions at Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Bogojae Gallery in Seoul, Korea, and the David Kaye Gallery in Toronto. Her work is held in private and corporate collections.
