Parrots Nest Wall Sculpture
2022. Epoxy Resin on wood panel
Thomas is interested in creating complex compositions out of elements that overlap each other, through a variety of planes which make the viewer’s eye constantly travel through the image, moving from one imaginary space to the other. Built upon each other, layers can be perceived as autonomous abstractions, or dependent elements which create new and convoluted images. Thomas has long worked with the intrinsic relationship between color and light to produce optically charged works that challenge our perception of space and color. Her paintings interact with the space in which they are exhibited and connect the viewer within their reflective qualities. Depth pulls the viewer in while the many reflections push the viewer out, inspiring audiences to ponder, imagine and feel.
Thomas’ works tempt us to slow down, and not take in facts too quickly as we are trained to. They also speak of places undiscovered, but at the same time comforting and familiar, sparking our memories of a place we feel we have been before but cannot quite recall the details.
Thomas grew up in Iran and moved to San Francisco Bay area in late 70s, she now lives and works in Newport Beach California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

ara Thomas, an Iranian American artist whose work is concerned with color, texture, and reflection, invites the viewer to explore beauty and challenge boundaries. Color as a form of energy which stimulates our perceptual processes is vital in conveying emotions, is her first point of impact. Depth, texture, and reflective surfaces are the subtleties which are experienced upon further observation. The smooth reflective surfaces and the translucent color layers of her paintings invite viewers to travel constantly through the image from one imaginary space to another. The successive translucent layers open a third dimension that enables viewers to see deeper into the painting, which seems imaginary at first glance. Thomas’ paintings are a summation of many layers of handmade pigments from semi-precious stones to organic dyes, suspended in epoxy resin on wood panels. Thomas’s large-scale abstract pieces present an infinite depth that blends the foreground and background seamlessly. - Nike's Advice XVIILocated in Boston, MAArtist Commentary: This work was started several years ago during a public art performance called Nike's Advice. I painted 130 feet of unprimed canvas with the public. It was scary! I don't consider myself a painter. I was having to accept Nike's Advice myself ... as in "Just Do It". Later I used my sewing machine to free-motion stitch around the paint, adding detail. Finally, the work was mounted on a stretcher bar with blue painted edges before being coated with UV filtering epoxy. - "MIDNIGHT BLUE", sculpture, clay, relief, abstract, contemporary, ceramicBy Harold WortsmanLocated in Toronto, OntarioMidnight Blue, a ceramic relief sculpture of high-fired porcelain pigmented with oxides, paint and epoxy, is a recent work by New York artist Harold Wortsman. This sculpture is ready to be mounted to the wall. Note the artist's hand in the mark-making – cuts and radiating lines, the suggestion of maps, geometry and counting systems – it is characteristic of Wortsman's practice. Warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, tribal traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets. Midnight Blue was recently exhibited at Harold Wortsman: Time and Space, Orange Art Foundation, New York City, February 2022. From Harold Wortsman – "With sculpture, my material of choice is high-fired clay. Pieces are first low-fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. Instead, I use oxides applied to the bisqued (low-fired) clay. As with a tattoo, oxides permit the surface underneath to breathe—like naked skin. The work is then high-fired in a gas kiln with double reduction to cone 10. The final temperature is 2,300 degrees F. At a certain point, oxygen intake is reduced to the kiln. Because the fire has reached a critical mass, it needs oxygen and chemically takes it from the clay and the oxides painted on. Like a jazz improvisation, each kiln load comes out slightly different." From Jonathan Goodman – "Wortsman has increasingly moved into his own – a place in which the relations between the abstractions of volume and the intimations of very old culture are merged in a way that is new." – Essay, "Harold Wortsman: Time and Space", Orange Art Foundation, February 2022, New York City. Harold Wortsman is a sculptor and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. He “creates forms that bring to mind archaic cult objects and exude a quiet concentrated strength.” (Argauer Zeitung, Switzerland). His work, an edgy mix of freedom and clarity, can be found in public and private collections in the US, including The Library of Congress, Yale University, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The New York Historical Society, Smith College, Indiana University’s Lilly Library, Brandeis University, The Newark Public Library Special Collections Division, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum Print Archive. Also in private and public collections in Europe, including the Municipal Collection of the City of Brugg, Switzerland. Harold studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, with sculptor George Spaventa...Category
