About the Item
Over the past few years, Jesse Hickman has been making minimal abstract paintings on wood with few constraints. He calls this series Notes, thinking of these pieces as drawn sketches or written annotations.
Within the context of reclaimed material, primarily wood from discarded shipping pallets and tree prunings, Notes explore the relationships of minimal shapes, nuanced color combinations, and layered surfaces, arriving at the right balance or imbalance in each piece.
The Notes quickly took over his complete focus, becoming playful and obsessive day-long explorations, freeing him from the self-imposed boundaries of much of his past work.
Artist Biography
In the late 80’s, Hickman began making minimal abstract paintings and sculpture. This self-taught work earned Hickman the first of his two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants. Work from this period was included in exhibitions at the Bemis Foundation, Rose Art Museum, the Renaissance Society and multiple gallery exhibitions.
Hickman’s work is in numerous public, private and corporate collections, and has been in over 80 solo and group exhibitions.
Hickman received a second Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2015, which helped make possible this current body of work.
