Morris Brose
Morris Brose "Roma II" Abstract Bronze Wall Sculptural

1965 - 1980

About the Item

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Roma II" is an exquisite example of Morris Brose's abstract sculpture that invites numerous imaginative suggestions from architecture to weaponry and armor. No soft edges on this piece and no invitation to caress, the power, strength and beauty of the bronze are front and center and create awe. Morris Brose, Polish/American was born in Wyszkow, Poland. He became a sculptor and instructor of sculpture at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings) and Eugene Caples (small abstract bronze images.) Though many of Brose’s pieces are considered whimsical his more geometric pieces can be considered an early representation of the abstract development which is apparent in his bronze doors of the Detroit Holocaust Memorial in Detroit from the 1980s.

  • "Blue Abstraction" Blown-glass, Steel, Abstract, Sculpture
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Blue Abstraction" is a blown-glass creation encased in steel. The captured organic lift of its shape belies the weight of its structure. The copper colored steel is a beautiful contrast to the deep cerulean blue of the glass and adds to the feel of sky and/or water seeming to give the piece a timeless flow. Albert Young has been operating an independent glass studio/school since 1983 and has been a pivotal member of the Detroit areas glass community. He received his BFA in ceramics from The Center For Creative in Studies in 1982 and his MFA in sculpture from Wayne State University in 1988 as well as studies in Taiwan, Murano, Italy and Canada. Albert currently owns and operates Michigan Hot Glass Workshop, Michigan’s oldest independent glass blowing school. He is also on the faculty at The College for Creative Studies where he teaches all levels of glass blowing and creative thinking. He is best known for his sculpture using innovative casting techniques and the combination of steel and glass. The College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver...

  • John Piet "Untitled" Abstract Geometric Steel
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY John Piet's "Untitled" from 1974 is a welded sculpture with two opposing forms connected by a swoop of steel. Piet's sculptural work explores the tension between contending elements, and other works investigating the relationship of heaven and earth. The form shown here in Untitled appears similar to the form in his 1975 large-scale work The Entrance currently located at the entrance of Harmonie Park in Detroit. The abstract drawing in the pictures above is part of the sculpture offer. The drawing was a study, work-in-progress, as John "worked out" the details of the final sculpture. John Piet was born in Detroit on American Street, and was educated at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now named College for Creative Studies). College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, Hughie Lee-Smith and Joseph Wesner. He received his MFA from Wayne State University where other well-known individuals taught or studied including Arthur Danto, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Susan Aaron-Taylor, Tyree Guyton, Hughie Lee-Smith, Philip Levine, Casey Kasem and Helen Thomas.
