Tom Price
The Presence of Absence – Male (I) by Tom Price - Coal sculpture, nude body

2014

About the Item

The Presence of Absence – Male (I) is a unique coal, stainless steel and epoxy resin sculpture by contemporary artist Tom Price, dimensions are 183 × 50 × 50 cm (72 × 19.7 × 19.7 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Coal is one of the artist's preferred materials. The artist appreciates both its inherent qualities and practical features, especially its darkness and opacity. As the building block of all known life forms and a vital source of energy for humans, coal is one of the purest forms of carbon. Tom Price gained a solid mastery in this medium and is now able to create a vast array of artwork with it because he learned by doing. The artist was influenced by the 79 AD Vesuvius eruption, which left the locals' bodies burned, destroyed, and yet strangely preserved. In Tom Price's work, the models' bodies are cast from coal, symbolizing their existence both now and after they are gone, suggesting their presence in the future. As a result, the silhouettes of these departed individuals become recollections, representations of the mental and physical emptiness that accompanies the loss of a loved one.
