About the Item

In my effort to make the sculpted bust a viable contemporary art form I have tried several approaches. This over-life-size piece is an example of my current preferred approach where a ‘tightly’ modeled head and expressive face is coupled with a dynamic, abstracted hair form. The juxtaposition and resulting tension make for a dynamic presence in the actual piece. Rather than use a glaze or patina on this piece, the fired clay is exhibited as bisque, normally a transitional or unfinished stage for ceramic works. However, during this pandemic period when this piece was created, I created several such heads. Though transgressive in the ceramics world they work well as contemporary pieces, showing the process of their creation, and the light tone of the bisque-fired clay shows the form and casts shadows well. The piece is mounted using a system and pedestal of my design and can be rotated freely. Pedestals can be custom made to collector’s requested height, e.g., tabletop (approximately 5”H), mid-height (approx. 30”H) or tall (42”-48”H)
