Jessica Carroll
Almost one meter diameter sphere bronze Bee Hive - unique outdoor sculpture

2022

About the Item

Bronze sculpture by the Italian-American sculptor Jessica Carroll Diameter cm 80 + iron base, kg 110 (pure bronze). Jessica Carroll's elegant and unique artwork is the result of years of study and experimentation, as well as knowledge of the world she represents. From the very beginning of her career, she has been inspired by nature. In particular, the Italian-American artist has always been fascinated by all those animal species that have life as a community: bees, but also eels, anchovies. Herds, swarms, flocks. She dedicates a large part of her sculptural production to bees, with the most diverse materials: bronze, ceramics, iron, marble. In bronze, she has found a fortunate ally with her latest Italian foundry, specialised in fine art, with long experience, who knows how to transfer carefully prepared waxes from Carroll into fine bronze sculptures. Biography Jessica Rosalind Carroll was born in Rome in 1961. At the age of five, she began working as a "young shopkeeper" by cleaning her painter's brushes and gradually learning various techniques including etching. Since she was very young, she has dedicated herself to drawing. She has made photographic research trips to numerous parks, nature reserves and places of nature around the world from Italian parks to those in northern Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, the Pamir plateau and the Volga delta park in Turkey , Israel, Burma, India and Africa. During a long period of stay in the United States, in addition to dedicating herself to photographic research in various national parks and reserves, or sanctuaries of the Audubon company, she attended courses in drawing, photography and chalcographic techniques at the Cleveland Institute of Art and readings on biology and ethology at the Western Reserve University. Five large pencil tables on cardboard on the flora and fauna of Lake Vico are permanently exhibited in the Park Visitor Center in Caprarola (Viterbo). For about seven years she has also devoted herself to sculpture in marble, bronze, terracotta and other materials. Recently she has developed a bas-relief drawing technique with pongo. In 2000 Jessica participated in a series of group exhibitions: at Gianenzo Sperone gallery, Salamon & C Gallery in Milan, at the Galleria dell'Incisione in Brescia, and at the Patrizia Buonanno Gallery in Trento and at Susanna Orlando gallery in Forte Dei Marmi. In December she illustrated for Fogola Editore in Turin the book of the Great Series "the Recall of the Forest" by Jack London. In April 2001 she exhibited at the castle of Franz Paludetto and on May at the gallery La vetrina by Elisabetta Giovagnoni in Rome. In 2002 she created a Hannukia for the Museo dei Lumi of the Synagogue of Casale Monferrato. She also participated in the exhibitions "Risalto" and "Rumorosa" in Monferrato and in a group exhibition at the Gallery dell'incisione in Brescia. In 2022 her artworks have been exhibited at Selvatica festival, the most significant art and nature Italian exhibition. Curated by Lorenza Salamon. This particular sculpture has been exhibited at the 43° edition of the Versiliana festival, the most significant Italian event dedicated to sculpture, in Tuscany.

The Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...
