White Marble Nude Figurative Sculpture Venus Aphrodite Signed Italian Grand Tour

after 1800

About the Item

an interesting and beautiful sculpture of Venus, knew as Venus de' Medici, depicts the goddess in a fugitive, momentary pose, as if surprised in the act of emerging from the sea, to which the dolphin at her feet alludes.Carved in the 19th century in a pure and elegant white marble, the sculpture here presented with the height of 81 m is a scale version of the original that has an height of 153 displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The statue, a Venus pudica, is inspired, like the other variants of the theme, by Praxiteles' Cnidian Aphrodite, with particular similarities to the Capitoline Venus. The work arrived in Rome at an unspecified time in antiquity and perhaps decorated Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. In the Renaissance, with the collecting fever of the great families present in the city, it was probably purchased by the then cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici to be exhibited at Villa Medici, even if the first certain documentation dates back to 1638. In 1677 it was brought to Florence by Cosimo III, who despite his reputation as a "bigot", had no problem placing the beautiful naked goddess in the Uffizi Tribune. Since then he has occupied a place of privilege in the gallery's collection of ancient statues. There are two inscriptions, one on the front which reads Canova, probably a tribute to the famous Italian sculptor and one on the back which probably refers to the author

The sculptural group titled "The Family" features a mother and father with two children. Numbered 20/20. A carver, designer, and teacher, Wolfgang Behl was born in Berlin, Germany where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher was otto Hitzberger, sculptor and architecture carver. I have seen some his work, particularly in carved wood compared to Constantin Brancusi although this one seems way more reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti. In 1939, Behl came to the United States and taught briefly in Pennsylvania at the Perkiomen School and in Rhode Island at the Rhode Island School of Design. There in 1943, he won the Joseph N. Eisendrath prize for sculpture. He also became a friend of Louis Mayer...
