Giovanni Battista Beinaschi Art
Italian, 1636-1688
Giovanni Battista Beinaschi (Fossano or Turin, 1636 - Naples, September 28, 1688) was an Italian painter, working in the Baroque period.
He was particularly active between Rome and Naples. He first worked in Rome, feeling especially the influence of Giovanni Lanfranco. In the papal city, his works can be found in the Basilica dei SS. Ambrogio and Carlo, in the church of San Bonaventura al Palatino and in the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio.
In the Oratory of the latter church, there are two large canvases by Beinaschi (ca. 5m. X 3m). They represent a Daniel in the lions' den, and the other the resurrection of Lazarus. In the vault and in the lunette of the church there are two frescoes. The Assumption taken to heaven and the Eternal Father in glory between Angels and Cherubs.
A Holy Family with Angels, attributed to Beinaschi from a book by Gian Domenico Cerrini dated 1652, is kept at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Also worthy of mention are two paintings exhibited at the Diocesan Museum of Salerno:
- Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus (third quarter of the 17th century), oil on canvas. - Moses making water gush from the rock (third quarter of the 17th century), oil on canvas.
The painting of St. Gregory in glory (around 1678-1679) is instead kept in the Civic Museum of Rieti. [1]
Settled in Naples around 1664, he created frescoes for the central nave and the dome of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Pizzofalcone, the dome and the pronaos of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (only those of the pronaos have survived to this day), the apse of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli, the dome of the Church of the Holy Apostles, the arches of the central nave and the vault of the sacristy of the Church of the Girolamini, the choir of the Church of Santa Maria in Portico and the vault of the Oratory of the Compagnia dei Bianchi della Giustizia. Present in the Church of Gesù Nuovo, inside the chapel of the Crucifix and of San Ciro, located on the presbytery wall at the back, are frescoes dating back to the last quarter of the seventeenth century.
In the Church of the Girolamini, in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli and in the Church of Santa Maria in Portico there are also works on canvas.
In the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, there are several frescoes by the author, including Glory of Saint Anthony and Stories from the life of Saint Anthony, in the Gruther chapel. In the same church, in the chapel of the D'Afflitto family, consecrated to Saint Eustace, the walls are frescoed with paintings with the theme Stories of Saints Paul and Ludovico. The fourth chapel, under the patronage of the Venata d'Aquino family, presents on the walls the Birth of the Virgin and the Death of Saint Anne.(Biography provided by Baratti Antiquario Milano)
