John Arthur Lomax
John Arthur Lomax was a painter of the historical genre with a dramatic and often humorous theme. Lomax was born in Manchester he then studied in Stuttgart and at the Munich Academy, which was a big influence on his work. The Munich painters of the 19th century were renowned for their carefully selected subjects, meticulous detail and fine brushwork quality; all of these skills were so beautifully represented in this painting. He returned to Manchester and later relocated to London. Lomax's subjects were mainly historical genres of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially of the Civil War period, often with a dramatic or sentimental theme. Lomax exhibited 33 paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists and also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
