Joseph Clark Art

British, 1834-1926

Joseph Clark was born near Dorchester, Dorset. He studied painting in London under J. M. Leigh, who was himself the only pupil of William Etty, RA, the celebrated painter of classical and historical subjects. Clarke specialized in depicting domestic genre subjects of a tender nature which generally featured children and he also painted a small number of biblical subjects. In 1857 at the age of 23, he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy and he continued to exhibit there for all but two of the subsequent 47 years. Many Victorian painters sought to demonstrate their social conscience through emphasizing in their paintings the importance of family life and Clarke was no exception. While avoiding the overly sentimental style of some of his contemporaries, he frequently chose subjects which sought to remind people of their good fortune in having a caring family at a time when many children grew up as orphans in workhouses. Clarke enjoyed considerable success with his paintings, maintaining both a London house and a home in the country for much of his life. In 1876, he was awarded a medal in Philadelphia for his paintings The Sick Child and The Nest. The Chantrey Bequest purchased two of his paintings, Early Promise in 1877 and A Mother's Darling in 1885.

Genre oil painting of a children’s coronation marching band
By Joseph Clark
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Joseph Clark ROI British, (1834-1926) The Coronation March Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1902 Image size: 25.5 inches x 19.5 inches Size including frame: 32.5 inches x 26.75 inches This painting by Joseph Clark depicts a lively group of boys leading a patriotic parade through a village. Two of the older children hold standards aloft, whilst the others wave flags or play instruments. In 1902, at the time of this painting Clark was living on Pinner Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill. The church depicted is very similar to Pinner Parish Church, which would have been the closest one to him at the time. On 9 August of that year, the coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra took place at Westminster Abbey. Special events were held all across the country to mark the occasion. Clark would probably have attended his local celebrations and was most likely was inspired to record his version of it. Joseph Clark was born on 4th of July 1834 at Cerne Abbas, Dorset. He was the son of William Henry Clark, a draper and his wife Susanna (née Shepherd). English 19thC Victorian Shipping scene with fishing boats in the English Channel
By William Anslow Thornley
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
