William Edward Norton Art

American, 1843-1916
Born in Boston, William Norton became a noted marine painter, stirred by his youth when he sailed on family-owned ships. He studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, and with George Inness, and then established a studio in Boston. In the early 1870s, he went to Paris and became a student with Chevreuse and A. Vollon, and then he settled in London where he exhibited throughout the last quarter of the 19th century. His reputation there was based on his scenes of the Thames River, and ocean and coastal views. In 1901, he and his wife returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island is named "Norton's Ledge" for him. He was a member of the Boston Art Club with whom he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. He also exhibited with the Pennsylvania Academy, the Royal Academy in London, the Paris Salon, the 1893 Chicago Exposition, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

A line of soldiers and prisoners moves from right to left. In front of them the three Marys kneel and pray for Christ. A nursing woman, symbol of Caritas, sits in the right foreground. Vista From West Campton, New Hampshire
By Frederick Williams
Located in Milford, NH
A fine New Hampshire landscape by American artist Frederick Dickinson Williams (1829–1915). Frederick Dickinson Williams was born into a patrician household in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation and until 1874, Williams taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874. Williams and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris. Williams returned to the United States and settled in Boston, opening a studio in late 1888. He continued to paint in the Boston area with regular trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and other wilderness areas where he produced a large body of French-inspired landscapes in the manner of Corot and other contemporary French painters. In 1904, a serious fire in his Boston studio destroyed all of his inventory, including a number of award-winning canvases from his Paris sojourn. Despite this significant loss, he continued to paint. During his long and successful career, Williams exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Washington DC Art...

William Edward Norton Barbizon Painting "Sheep at Pasture"
By William Edward Norton
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A fine dreamy scene of sheep scattered across a gentle slope before a tumbling brook that meanders into the thicket of trees and bushes beyond, the painting shows a depth of color and chaotic pigment treatment throughout the foliage. In replication of nature, where no one color dominates and a kaleidoscope of hues make up any single element, Norton does a marvelous job of capturing mood of the moment and realism of the season together. His sheep are finely rendered and despite their tiny footprint in the overall scheme of the work, they define the setting and show marvelous shadowing and variation. The gray sky is a perfect saturation to match the low-chroma hues throughout the landscape, setting a slightly heavy mood to the scene. It is signed lower left William E Norton...
