French Straw Garden Bonnet Hat, 1930's

About the Item

1930's charming straw bonnet with raffia embroidered floral motif made in France for the prominent 5th Avenue New York department store, Franklin Simon and their 'Petit Chapeau Shop'. The bonnet is lined in a fine cotton and sports satin woven chin ties. It looks like the perfect accessory for a Jane Austin garden party or a Merchant Ivory picnic. CONDITION Good to fair condition with signs of age. The interior lining shows a combination of spotting and fading, please see photograph 13. The straw exterior has some darkening here and there though overall it looks good. MEASUREMENTS It is possible the 'Petit Chapeau Shop' was for young women though the bonnet appears to be adult size though no hat size is marked. When flattened, it measures 14" across x 7.5" tall. When flattened sideways as shown in photograph 9, it measures 10" from front to back x 9" tall. Each chin strap measures 12.5" long x 1.25" wide.
