Blue Cloak embroidered with gold Zari - India for the European market Circa 1870

About the Item

Last third of the 19th century India for European fashion Visite shawl in fine turquoise blue woolcloth, densely embroidered with gold Zari in India for the European market. Orientalist in spirit, this tour adorns the dresses à tournure or à crinoline of the 19th century. Two long panels with fringed flaps at the front form a false hood at the back, which is emphasised by two basques split at the waist. Rows of gold embroidery (Zari) with stylised temple designs (?) and matching knotted fringes. An attachment point at the front and two gold tassels added later. No major stains or flaws apart from a few tiny repairs in the wool and a small area of sewing stoppage, period repairs (last photos). The gold embroidery is bright and flawless. Good overall condition in terms of colour and conservation for its age. Enough strong to be worn. Dimensions: Front height 107 cm, front width 70 cm each. Back height 71 cm.
