1969 Bob Mackie Couture Documented Beaded Nude-Illusion Pleated Silk Cape Gown

About the Item

An important and ultra glamourous 'Elizabeth the First' Bob Mackie debut label sheer black beaded nude-illusion cape gown dating back to 1969. This rare label is from a very short-lived Beverly Hills boutique that he started with partners Ray Aghayan and costume designer Elizabeth Courtney. They catered to rich and famous clientele. This stunning showstopper was custom made for the beloved actress Lainie Kazan and we were thrilled to see her use the detachable cape for her 1970 October editorial in Playboy! These early introductory Bob Mackie gowns are rare, as they were not mass marketed and were incredibly expensive at the time. This gown is a perfect example of his genius and one of the earliest examples of his nude illusion effect. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; luxurious 'light as a feather' sheer black pleated silk with a tan nude lining. I love the ultra low plunge empire bodice with tons of sparkle glass-beads and prong-set rhinestones. The embellishment alone represent days of couture style hand beading at the highest level. A gown also has the most magical over-sized cape sleeves which can be cleverly removed. This silhouette also emphasizes a woman's seductive shape without adding any bulk or volume to the actual hips. The magnificent pleat work gives the skirting so much depth and texture. Bob Mackie has dressed many legends- Madonna, Tina Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, Judy Garland and Cher among them. This is such a wearable museum worthy piece of fashion and celebrity history that will instantly become a favorite in your collection. We added many pictures so you can appreciate this archival dress from all angles. Measurements Bust: 36-38 inches High Waist: 30-31 inches Hips: Free Sweep Total Length:62 inches This 'Elizabeth the First' for Lainie Kazan Bob Mackie debut cape gown is in beautiful wearable condition with no noticeable rips, holes, stains or alternations. The construction of this garment is impeccable. Perfectly working center hand-set back zipper and bodice double lining. Highly wearable and a true work of art that will continue to increase in value.

  • Vintage 1970 Mainbocher Couture Vogue Documented Hot Pink Flocked Silk Dress
    By Mainbocher
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
Gorgeous Mainbocher couture shocking pink abstract floral dress dating back to his 1970 collection. As shown, this design was modeled by Loulou de la Falaise for Vogue magazine. Mainbocher was a well-respected couturier who operated fashion houses in Paris and later New York from the 1930's through the 1970's. Mainbocher's arrival in New York coincided perfectly with the city élite's love for French couture, for though he epitomized it, he satisfied their patriotism because he was actually an American. The integrity of luxurious fabrics, intricate cut, quality workmanship were cherished by Mainbocher's upper crust customers. This mid 1960's dress is a perfect example of his genius. The fabric is a lush mid-weight velvet flocked silk satin. The 3/4-length sleeve buttons down bodice really compliments the classic nipped-waist silhouette. The dress can even be worn as a dramatic jacket if you choose to leave it unbuttoned. You get the effect of elegance and edgy at the same time. I love the sculpted mermaid skirting which really moves beautifully when worn. As Mainbocher once said "I have never known a really chic...
