Jacques Cassia Couture Strapless Silver Brocade Party Dress - S, 1950s

About the Item

Though his work has only recently begun to be appreciated, Lebanese designer Jacques Cassia was a familiar face among the haute monde in the 1960s and 70s. His best-known work was a cross between Paco Rabanne and Halston: silk jersey maxi dresses with metal bustiers and revealing cutouts. This dress from the 1950s is an extremely rare example of his early work, which was much more traditional in design but painstakingly well made. Very few of Cassia’s early designs remain available, much less wearable; this Dior-esque dress is one of them. Strapless dress with brocade bodice and split-front circle skirt trimmed in matching metallic brocade. Deeply darted bodice reinforced with flexible boning at front, back and side seams; fixed brocade bow at center waist. Rear metal zipper closure with top hook and eye; interior grosgrain waistband strap with hook and eye closure at center back. Hidden hanging straps. Bodice lined in pink acetate; skirt unlined. fabric: metallic silk brocade noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: replaced bodice stays condition: good with two light spots on right front and rear of skirt and extremely gentle silk “shattering” at rear zipper measurements: bust: 34” underbust/ribcage: 29” bodice length: 10” in front, 6” in back waist: 25 ½” hips: free skirt length: 26 ½” total length: 35 ½” from underarm sweep: 183” hem: 2 ½” label: Jacques Cassia Haute Couture (Beyrouth) size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size small-medium

A highly traditional gown with positively regal bearing, this full-skirted wedding dress covers all bases. Though it conceals and arms and neck for propriety, its Queen Anne neckline provides allure through its center plunge; it has a full train for the ceremony, but can be buttoned at the rear back for the reception and dancing; lace and pearl beading provide texture and interest, but ultra-heavyweight Duchess satin lend gravitas and modesty. Truly, fit for a Queen. Ivory wedding gown...
