A Redingote Velvet dress by Jean-Charles Worth Haute Couture - Paris Circa 1923

About the Item

Circa 1923/1924 Paris Redingote evening dress in chimney sweep brown velvet embroidered in a champagne color by the famous Maison Worth. Ample straight cut, long sleeves, high collar buttoned Russian style, finely gathered in three rows at the bottom of the hips. A nod to the 19th century with the row of ball buttons in a military style and pagoda cuffs! The embroidery on cream Georgette crepe superimposes rows of sequins and silver threads embroidered in chain stitch in horizontal bands. These Ballets Russes-style ethnic motifs are set in a silver camaieu of tubular glass beads, silver cabochons and grey marcasite beads. No lining and silver damask label mentioning Worth. No flaws. Very good colour and condition. A Collector's item. Size: French size 38-40. Height 112cm, shoulders 38cm, chest 92cm, waist 82cm, hips 102cm, sleeves 59cm. Jean-Philippe Worth (1856-1926) was the son of Charles Frederick Worth, a pioneer of French Haute Couture and a famous fashion house that operated from 1858 to 1954. After spending a few months studying with the painter Camille Corot, who gave him a certain artistic sensibility, Jean-Philippe Worth joined Worth in 1872. Jean-Philippe took over his father's business in 1895, and during the Belle Epoque, the famous firm was at the height of its fame. He was succeeded by Jean-Charles Worth, who signed this dress around 1923. Worth's toilets were known as the most inventive and fashionable in the world.
