About the Item
Circa 1720/1750
Coromandel Coast India for the Palampore
France Provence for the quilting
A large quilted bedcover or hanging of an early printed indian Palampore surrounded by a green yellow taffeta silk of the same period. Orderly and architecturally large decor with central medallion, four spandrels and an over-gallery of friezes. Stylized vegetal repertoire in scrolls and baroque illuminations. Printed cotton, mordant and resist dyed, wax reserve and pincelled finish in red, black, purple and yellow-brown tones. Excellent condition of color and conservation.
Dimensions: 244 cm x 276 cm in total, 208 cm x 145 cm for the painted canvas
In Provence as in India or in Asia, the tradition of the quilting makes it possible to safeguard the rich textiles such as the Chintz of India. Here the bedcover is quilted by cotton wool interleaved and lining in ecru linen. The design of the stitiching with green cotton thread is from the same decorative repertoire as the Palampore. The painting on canvas is a drawing made from a European baroque design and freely interpreted by the Indian craftsman. The canvas does not have an export stamp as was often the case for the British East India Company (1600-1858) or the Dutch East India Company (VOC for Vereenigde Oostindische Company) (1602-1799). It is most likely a canvas made for the French and Provençal market (French East India Company 1664-1769) and introduced into the kingdom by smuggling since the Prohibition of Indiennage in France is lifted by Louis XV than in 1759.
