Chinese Red Lacquer Carrying Basket

About the Item

This lacquered Chinese carrying basket impresses with a prim, balanced form of intricately woven split bamboo. A celebratory form traditionally used for carrying food or delivering gifts, the lidded basket has a rounded body elevated by a footed base and surmounted by an arched handle, both of thick strips of painted bamboo. Brushed atop a red-brown lacquer, the basket’s lid is painted with a contrasting black motif of orchids, leafy foliage and stars. Minor breaks to bamboo weave.
