Chinese Export Kendi, Swatow Ware, Porcelain with Polychrome Enamels, circa 1900

About the Item

A delightful Swatow ware Chinese export shipwreck porcelain kendi featuring a writing dragon and an apocryphal Tongzhi mark, late 19th or early 20th century, China, made for the Indonesian market. The kendi is decorated in wonderful and exuberant polychrome enamels of red, green and yellow. A writhing dragon in iron red warps sinuously around the body, surrounded by scrolling floral and vegetal designs in green, red and yellow enamels. The mammary spout with a similar floral and vegetal design. The narrow neck with an abstracted banana leaf design. An apocryphal six character ?????? "Da Qing Tongzhi Nian Zhi" mark to the underside. The glazes somewhat degraded, with a more matte finish, typical of shipwreck pottery. The kendi, or pouring vessel, though ubiquitous in Southeast Asia, is one of the more unusual vessel forms. The vessel is comprised of a compressed globular body surmounted by a tall, narrow neck and flanged mouth. The spout is often referred to as a "mammary" spout, due to its resemblance to the female breast. Kendi are used in both daily and ritual life as both pouring and drinking vessels.
