Korean Ceramic Tea Bowl with Slip Inlays Goryeo Dynasty
About the Item
A small ceramic conical form tea bowl from Korean Goryeo Dynasty circa 14th century. The bowl is of a slightly irregular shape and covered in a grayish overglaze. The inlaid slip decoration in black and white features willow trees with weeping branches and upright sprays of flowers, arranged alternately on the interior surface, under a border with scrolling pattern around the rim. The exterior of the bowl showcases four chrysanthemum blossoms under a double-lined band. There color and visual texture of the glaze on the exterior is rather unusual showing a smear like spread and pooling in some areas such as around the rim. It was most likely due to some slip becoming mixed with the glaze during the making process. Imperfect technically but aesthetically charming, this small bowl will appeal to the collectors with a penchant for early Goryeo pieces with rustic flavors.
