Large Pair of Chinese Export Vases in the Rockefeller Palette

About the Item

This pair of baluster vases, painted in the manner of the Export ware of the 18th century, combine a highly decorative gilt and painted ground with large and playful scenes in reserves…a French(?) gentleman and his son, hot on the chase. At their feet is a pack of Dalmatians. These dogs had a powerful chase instinct and were used on the Continent to hunt deer and boar. Charmingly the decorator had no clear idea how such dogs would look so made it up to rather comical effect. With exotic fruits and crab-stalk handles this pair decorated in a rich and diverse palette and would fit well in many interior settings.
