Pair of Chinese Merchant's Armchairs with Burlwood Inlay, c. 1850
About the Item
This pair of unusual 19th century armchairs likely once belonged to a prosperous merchant, as evidenced by the brass coin slot on each seat. Presiding over valuables stored in the two drawers below, the merchant would have been able to remain seated during transactions and simply drop coins through the slot.
Crafted of northern elmwood with a burl wood inset panel, the chairs exhibit a fusion of Qing-dynasty furniture designs. The single central backsplat is reminiscent of the southern official's hat armchair, while the low back and square frame is characteristic of the diminutive rose chair. With its intriguing design and richly aged patina, these low armchairs are fantastic as accent chairs in a living room or hallway.
