Pair of Five Tiered Baskets, 19th Century
About the Item
This type of basket was used to hold different kinds of sweet cakes to give away on special occasions to friends and relatives. The recipient would take the contents and return the baskets to the sender with a red packet as token of appreciation. Each tier is decorated with "open begonia" to signify prosperity. These are made of woven bamboo strips in a hexagonal shape. The handles are decorated with metal hooks so that they can be carried with a pole. A metal pin is used to lock and secure the containers on the top. This pair of containers is very decorative in style, and therefore is believed to have been made for a special purpose such as a wedding or special birthday.
