About the Item
As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this beautiful Meiji Period (1868-1912) gold lacquer stacking cosmetics box (Ju- Kobako) this delightful cylindrical lacquer box consists of three graduated compartments each of which are Nashiji lacquer decorated within. This jewel like but time consuming technique continues on the exterior of the container upon which the artist has built up further layers of mixed lacquers to produce a continuous scene of sprigs of crysanthemums, using a variety of lacquer techniques and tones, the lid is further decorated with sprays of native flora, this pattern match is only possible by aligning the compartments in the correct order.
