About the Item
A very attractive Japanese wood table top jewelry or collector's chest with marquetry and lacquer decoration, Meiji period, circa 1900, Japan. Previously in the collection of Asbjorn Lunde (1927 - 2017).
The chest is crafted in the form of a Chinese seal chest, a mainstay of the scholar's studio. The small chest features beautiful geometric marquetry work in various contrasting precious woods throughout, and a marquetry "fuku" character to the lid.
The large double doors inset with lacquer and gilt decorated panels of chickens and blooming plum branches. The right door with a long tailed cockerel, the left door with a hen and chicks The double doors open to reveal a series of six small drawers, all with faces of gold maki-e and black lacquer decorated to form a large landscape scene. The interior of the doors decorated in the same manner.
The domed top of the chest lifts up to reveal number of small open compartments finished in black lacquer. The interior of the dome decorated in maki-e lacquer with a large spray of chrysanthemum.
A single large drawer at the bottom completes the chest.
The chest also fitted with metal hardware, including drawer pulls, hinges, and lock plates, as well as carrying handles to the sides. The locks inoperable and keys missing.

- Condition:Repaired: Glue repairs to the back of the cabinet. Additions or alterations made to the original: A later sliding catch mechanism to the interior. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. The lacquer panels with shrinkage. Slight warping to the wood, especially to the domed top. Small losses to the metal fittings.
